LAMPS AND
LIGHTING
EQUIPMENT
Incandescent and LED lamps may contain lead, while fluorescent
lamps contain mercury — both of which are toxic metals that can
cause irreversible damage if they leach into the soil and
groundwater after ending up in landfills.
Lighting equipment such as luminaires, switch components,
ballasts, fixtures and modules often contains hazardous materials
that can be harmful if not properly treated. Substances like
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are used to enhance product safety
and functionality, but these chemicals must be correctly managed
at end-of-life to prevent harm to people and the environment.
